From the sidelines of semi-retirement, I sympathise with the disciplinary
impulse that has led to the creation of Baffts - and the sense that the
larger collective apparently doesn't provide a desired identity. However,
Martin, Ian and others make the point that the Meccsa history is something
of a hydra, and that earlier incarnations were led by an understanding of
the need to reconcile specialised disciplinary communities with the
overarching political imperative in troubled times. The Meccsa specialist
networks now operate effectively and offer both functional contact and a
particular profile / identity - and the potential to mobilise the Meccsa
name in pursuit of sectional interests is a powerful tool. I recommend that
Baffts members consider the advantages of Film & Screen Studies Network
(and/or more tightly defined networks) within Meccsa, where members can
sign up to one or many - my Meccsa...
