Dear colleagues
I would like to lend my strong support to Martin's plea for unity. My own experience comes from sitting with him and others on the QAA benchmarking committee for 'Communication, Media, Film and Cultural Studies' . For some that Lego-like yoking together of fields with different histories and foci points to a problem without a solution. I take the opposite view . The committee laboured long and hard to produce a document that would allow the maximum possible diversity of activity to be legitimated and to thrive . I know from what people have told me since , that this openness, coupled with the overall intellectual justification we offered for the importance of high quality research and teaching across these four areas, helped people working in them to persuade their institutions to support them. It is precisely this support that is now at risk. At a time when the future of teaching and research in arts ,humanities and social sciences faces unprecedented threats from the relentless questioning of its value and from the new funding regimes, we need more than ever before to stand together. An integrated professional association that has proved it worth and established its credibility at the bargaining table is an essential resource in this struggle.
Best
