A Conducive Context?
Misogyny, inequality, violence
Wednesday 22 June 2011
9.15 am – 4.30pm
London South Bank University
Conference focus:
This conference will explore relationships between acts of male violence against women and the broader cultural, social, political and economic context. Focusing on the national UK situation, it aims to build on current debates amongst feminist academics and activists, and to help identify ways forward in the present political climate.
The starting point for the conference is recognition of several decades of feminist scholarship and activism, which make connections between individual acts of violence against women and a „conducive context‟1 of cultural misogyny and inequality between women and men. The conference also aims to support and promote intersectional approaches which recognise how inequalities in terms of „race‟, ethnicity, class, immigration status and nationality, disability and sexuality, affect individual women‟s experience of and vulnerability to violence.
Speakers include:
Joan Smith – Columnist, critic and novelist
Dr. Aisha Gill – Senior Lecturer in Criminology, Roehampton University
Pragna Patel – Southall Black Sisters
Professor Liz Kelly - Child and Woman Abuse Studies Unit, London Metropolitan University; Co-Chair, End Violence Against Women Coalition

London South Bank University, London SE1
