Hello all!
I wonder if I could pick anyone's brains for a talk I'm giving at the
Community Archives conference this year (June 22nd)?
The theme of the conference is 'Telling Your Story: Challenges and
Opportunities in 2011'. I'm on the committee of the Community Archives and
Heritage Group (CAHG) and I'm giving a short talk on the current issues and
trends that might affect community archives (e.g. changes in technology,
the 'Big Society', funding cuts etc.) In preparation, I'm canvassing
opinions from a range of sources - including the expert folk who follow this
e-mail list.
I'd be particularly interested in some MCG views on technological changes
that might affect community archives in the next few years, bearing in mind
that these are typically run by groups of volunteers with small digital
collections, limited technical knowledge (or interest!) and virtually no
budget. Might they benefit at some point in the future from cloud storage
for digital preservation, for example? At what point will sharing their
place-specific content via mobile devices come within reach? These groups
are also wrestling with the topical question of whether to try and generate
revenue from the online digital assets or to release them openly, which I
know is a subject close to MCG hearts.
If any of you are happy to share your comments via a 10-minute chat on the
phone in the coming week, I would very much appreciate it. Just let me know
your number and a good time to call! Alternatively, send me an e-mail.
Thanks for any help you can give. We'll be publishing the presentation given
at the conference after the event, and I'll share the link with this list.
Best wishes
Jack
