<P>On the other hand, one of the things which seemed to come up often in the Professional Future discussions was that members find the CILIP courses too London-centric and&nbsp;too expensive so this is possibly a response to that.</P>

&nbsp;Apart from the message it sends to members and might-be members, to the unitiated this&nbsp;&nbsp;seems a rather&nbsp;strange decision.<BR>&nbsp;<BR>Information skills are among&nbsp;the most transferable of all&nbsp;skills and being able to find and organise information&nbsp;puts people way ahead in the job market. Whichever job you're in, these skills are crucial. <BR>&nbsp;<BR>I've long&nbsp;been surprised that Cilip hasn't promoted its courses&nbsp;more strongly to a wider audience: they've got captive expert&nbsp;teachers, a marketing team, yet seem to have restricted themselves to a very narrow, declining&nbsp;professional area (and one that's rarely been wealthy!).<BR>&nbsp;<BR>There are several companies running courses in this area, charging four-figure fees, and turning people away.<BR>&nbsp;<BR>I've tried a few of these courses. The content is much like you'd get in the first week at library school: taught, in general, by non-information
 professionals,&nbsp;yet attracting people from all over the world - sometimes, even as a condition of employment. It has always surprised me that Cilip leaves this to others to make money from.<BR>&nbsp;<BR>Just as an example of people's enthusiasm: in a recent Update column, Phil B. recommended a new book entitled <EM>Beyond Google</EM>. I sent the jacket image to a number of non-professionals. Each responded: Wow - this is something new: I must buy the book. What's the invisible web? And how do&nbsp;I find a definition?<BR>&nbsp;<BR>Next, they'll need training!<BR>&nbsp;<BR>Ralph<BR>&nbsp;<BR><BR>&nbsp;<BR>
