Job Title – Two Teaching Fellows in German
Job Summary
Fixed term from 1 September 2011 to 30 June 2012
These posts are to cover for one colleague on sabbatical, and one to cover for Prof. Stuart Taberner, who has been awarded a Leverhulme Trust Research Fellowship. You will join a team committed to excellence in language teaching and to the delivery of research-informed and research-led teaching at all levels and will be expected to contribute to all areas of the curriculum and pastoral programme. You will have a PhD in a relevant area of German Studies (or a submitted doctoral thesis awaiting examination) and a track record of successful teaching in Higher Education.

University Grade 7 (£29,972- £35,788 p.a). Due to funding limitations it is likely that the Leverhulme cover post will be at a maximum of £32,751

Job Description
Responsible to: Head of School
Reports to: Deputy Head of School
Main Duties and Responsibilities
• To coordinate and/or teach on at least two of the following modules in Applied and Professional German:
GERM 2040/2041/2042 Applied German Language
GERM 3060 German for Professional Purposes
GERM 3090/3091/3092 Advanced Translation
MODL 5114 and MODL 5115 Specialised German Translation
• To teach on Core language modules at all levels
To teach literature, culture, film and history on at least two of the following research-informed modules:
GERM 1070 Approaching German Culture
GERM 2700 Freedom and Control
GERM 2310/2311 Berlin Republic
GERM 2400/2401 Gender and Cultural Representation
GERM 3140 War Imagined: Cultural Representations of War and Conflict in Germany
GERM 3110 Dissertation in German
• EITHER to develop existing links with German firms offering internships as part of the Residence Abroad provision for German students and to coordinate this aspect of RA provision OR  to take the lead in promoting a research culture among undergraduates through coordinating and developing the Students as Scholars programme
• To play a full role in tutoring, examining, curriculum development, KT activities and open days
• To undertake any other duties as may reasonably be required, consistent with the grade of the post

Person Specification
Essential:
• have a PhD in a relevant discipline related to German Studies (or a submitted doctoral thesis awaiting examination)  (A)
• have a track record of successful teaching in HE in particular (A, I)
• Native or near native speaker competence in English and German (A, I)
• In keeping with our commitment to research-informed teaching in our areas of research strength, you will be able to contribute to level 2 and 3 content modules in the area of your research (post -1945 culture, literature, film and history) (A,I)
• be able to teach German language at all levels post ‘A’ level (A, I)
In addition the following are essential requirements for one post (non-Leverhulme replacement):
• be able to and and take responsibility for coordinating and delivering modules in applied and professional German at Levels 2 and 3 (A, I)
• be able to make a major contribution to translation from German to English at undergraduate and post-graduate level (A, I)
• be willing and able to develop existing links with German firms offering internships as part of the Residence Abroad provision for German students (A,I)

Desirable
• Ability to demonstrate effective teaching skills and a range of delivery techniques and assessment methods (A,I)
• Ability to contribute to teaching translation from German to English
• Ability to take the lead in developing the research skills and awareness of students across the curriculum
• Administrative experience in the UK HE context (A,I)
• Willingness to undertake staff development in appropriate areas (A, I)

Learning and Teaching Award
The Senate of the University has agreed that all newly appointed staff with a contract of 0.5 fte and above who have a teaching role and are deemed new to teaching in HE should be required to complete successfully all of the requirements of the University of Leeds Teaching Award: Professional Standard 2 (ULTA-2) or an appropriate alternative.  Whether or not this applies to you will be decided as part of the appointment procedure at interview.
