About "Béthune", could this non-lenited French 't' descend from older 'tt' (as likely with the adjective 'petit' = "small") or from older 'ct' as in "[j'ai] dit" = "said" from Latin 'dictus'?
In looking for French placename etymologies, how much is research hindered by mass destruction of French local feudal parchment records during the French Revolution? (E.g. Carlyle reported that hundreds of seigneurs' châteaux were set on fire during the widespread rural violence.)
