Lancaster University: ESRC Seminar Series
LINKING AGEING & DISABILITY RIGHTS AGENDAS: Opportunities, Challenges and Tensions
The Centres for Ageing Research and Disability Research at Lancaster University are pleased to announce an
exciting new seminar series designed to provide space for dialogue and interdisciplinary debate around the
challenges and tensions involved in forming closer links between the ageing anti-discrimination and
disability rights agendas. The series is designed to enhance critical and innovative thinking on disability and
ageing research. Each seminar will be facilitated by some key thinkers, policy-makers and activists. Our aim
is to encourage interaction between academics, policy-makers and practitioners from the public, private and
third sectors - as well as communities of older and disabled people. We are now inviting expressions of
interest from those interested in participating in this series.
Seminar 2: Thursday 29th September 2011
Ageing and disability: 'writing in' gender and disability
The importance of gender and sexuality amongst older and disabled people is often overlooked by policymakers
and practitioners. The second seminar in this series will set out the key challenges involved in
bringing the ageing and disability rights agendas into dialogue in relation to these issues and will explore
points of interconnection and difference. Key speakers from both the 'ageing' and 'disability rights'
perspectives will set the scene with short 'position papers'; discussion groups will then take these debates
forward. Dialogue will be rooted in 'real life' concerns in the 21st century. The key emphasis will be on
exchanging knowledge and ideas through discussion and debate amongst participants, with the aim of
fleshing out the difficulties, gaps, and potential solutions in this field.
Seminar format
The seminar will run from 10.00 am - 5.00 pm on Thursday 29th September in fully accessible rooms at
Lancaster University. Though not compulsory, participants are encouraged to travel on Wednesday 28th
September in order to join us for an evening meal and overnight stay to facilitate informal networking and
knowledge exchange.
Each seminar will be limited to approximately 30 participants in order to maximize opportunities for
discussion. However, remote participation opportunities for those unable to attend in person will be offered
through Adobe Connect web-conferencing.
Attendance is free but participants are expected to cover their own travel and accommodation costs.
Bursaries
To encourage the participation of postgraduate research students and unwaged, we have a limited number
of small travel bursaries (a maximum of £55.00) within our budget for each seminar. To apply, applicants
should indicate their desire to be considered for a bursary on their Expression of Interest form (see below).
We may require confirmation of your status as a PGR student or unwaged.
Registration and Contact Details
If you would like to come to Seminar 2, or would like to attend virtually through Adobe Connect
please fill out the 'Expression of Interest' form available at:
http://www.lancs.ac.uk/shm/research/seminars/esrc-seminar.php
Completed forms should be sent to: A&D Seminar Series, Division of Health Research, Bowland Tower
