Roger,
The use of aluminium was banned in the UK after an explosion at
Glyncorrwg Colliery, on 13 January 1954, was found to have been
propagated by an aluminium borer falling onto a rusty iron plate and
causing a spark. I've seen this demonstrated by the Safety in Mines
Research Establishment and it makes a very impressive spark.
