You asked about a film to explain things. There's a very useful short made by Robert Rodriguez that explains how he made his extremely low budget first feature, El Mariachi. It is included on some of the DVDs of that film. "Ten MInute Film School" has the director explain and show how he shot and edited part of the film. He later did a follow up, Anatomy of a Shoot-out in which he explains his technique of video storyboarding for his feature Desprado. He's made a few more (see IMDb.com for details).
His impetus was to answer the question he was frequently asked about how he shot the film. I've shown it to filmmaking students who thought it was very helpful in understanding some basic techniques, and most of all inspiring as an example of creative low-budget filmmaking. Most people want to make a film after seeing it, I'd say.
