The Graduate Studies Programme (GraSP) at CEPS/INSTEAD organizes a training course on
SMALL-AREA ESTIMATION
by Prof. Nicholas T. Longford (SNTL and Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Barcelona, Spain)
May 30th - June 1st , 2011 at CEPS/INSTEAD Research Institute, Esch/Alzette – Luxembourg.
The course is intended for postgraduate students, researchers and other professionals with interest in the subject of small-area statistics, with a focus on its applications in government/administration, economics, health care, social issues (including poverty) and related areas. The course is free of charge but registration is mandatory.
Abstract:
Small-area estimation is concerned with inferences about the districts (provinces, regions, or other units) of a country, based on a national survey, administrative register, or a combination of such sources. The key issue is that although the analyzed database may contain ample information about the country as a whole, some districts may be represented in it by very few records. This issue is addressed by exploiting the similarity of the districts (borrowing strength). The similarity may be enhanced by relating the focal variable to some auxiliary variables that may originate from a different database.
