On behalf of ADB10,
Call for papers
91TH TRB ANNUAL MEETING
JANUARY 22 - 26, 2012
WASHINGTON, D.C.
Structure and Content:
Using Quantitative and Qualitative Methods for Understanding Decision Processes
The TRB Behavioral Processes Sub-Committee, ADB10(4), invites submission of papers for presentation at the 91th Annual Meeting of the Transportation Research Board, and possible publication in the Transportation Research Record.
As the multidimensional nature of transportation problems becomes increasingly evident, so does the need to develop a better understanding of behavioral processes. Transportation research has been well served by quantitative approaches – these approaches continue to be central in the field. Increasingly though, as other societal goals gain prominence, there is an interest in the application of qualitative approaches. Quantitative methods are valuable tools to generate structure, identify statistical correlations, and patterns of dependence. They can precede and/or follow the application of qualitative research. Qualitative approaches can clarify issues prior to data collection, and generate in-depth insights to add content to quantitative findings post analysis. Both approaches can be used to assess the convergence, divergence, or uniqueness of findings.
This year the Behavioral Processes Sub-Committee is interested in and would welcome submissions on the use of qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods in transportation research. This includes, but is not limited to, the following topics:
Transportation research using mixed methods: progress and prospects
Using focus groups to inform survey design
Quantitative research in need of additional content
Open-ended questionnaires or ethnographies to inform quantitative research
Qualitative case studies to infer larger quantitative models
Applications to decision making
