The following studentship for UK/EU students is available at the University of Strathclyde. Please pass on to anyone who may be interested.
Project title: Social science and engineering meet at the crossroads: understanding how infrastructure change and psychosocial factors influence walking and cycling behaviour
This 3 year full-time PhD studentship is offered with a start date of October 2011. The successful candidate will receive an annual stipend of £13,590 and a fee-waiver at Home/EU level (2011/12 rates).
The studentship is jointly offered by the Faculties of Engineering and Humanities and Social Sciences under the supervision of Professor Nanette Mutrie (Physical Activity for Health and Dr Neil Ferguson (Civil Engineering). The student will have access to facilities in both Faculties and will be expected to spend time in both research groups.
All applicants should hold or expect to hold at least a good Honours degree (2:1 or above) in a relevant discipline. Additionally, a Masters degree (Transport Planning, Research Methods or related areas) or equivalent research experience is preferred.
Toronto Charter for Physical Activity for Health shows that levels of inactivity are a global concern as a cause of ill health and that focusing interventions on transport is one of the most realistic ways of increasing everyday physical activity. This project aims to explore how best to combine engineering measures and promotional activities which target individual-level psychosocial factors in order to bring about a step change in walking and cycling levels.
Deadline for receipt of completed applications: Monday 13th June 2011.
