Funded PhD Studentship
School of Psychology, Bangor University
Supervisor: Prof Paul Downing

Applications are invited for a three-year fully funded PhD studentship
in the School of Psychology, Bangor University under the supervision of
Prof Paul Downing. The studentship is available from October 1st 2011
(or as soon as possible thereafter) and includes payment of UK / EU
level tuition fees, a maintenance allowance of approximately 13,590 and
a research allowance of 750 per year for 3 years.

Project

A highly-motivated, enthusiastic student, with strong written and oral
presentation skills and a strong grasp of experimental psychology and/or
neuroimaging methods is required to fill this position, and some
programming skills (e.g. Matlab) would be desirable.

Information about some of the ongoing projects in the lab are listed
below. An interest in these specific themes is welcome but not essential:

- An ESRC-funded project (with Steve Tipper) using multi-voxel pattern
analysis (MVPA) and other fMRI methods in order to investigate the human
'mirror system'. Are there brain areas for which local patterns of BOLD
activity distinguish among different actions, across the visual and
motor domains?

- A Leverhulme-funded project using online and offline TMS. We are
examining how disruption of activity in various nodes of the proposed
human "action perception network" changes both the BOLD activity in
other parts of the network as well as action-perception behavioural
performance.

- A new collaborative project (with Kim Graham, Cardiff) that is funded
by the BBSRC will focus on using fMRI (primarily with MVPA) to assess
the perceptual functions of the medial temporal lobes, and to compare
these directly to the functions of category-selective areas of the
extrastriate cortex.

More information about the lab is available at http://pages.bangor.ac.uk/

Applications for this studentship will be considered from June 15th,
2011 until the position is filled.

Informal enquiries about the project should be directed to

How to Apply

Applicants are expected to have a first or upper second-class honours
degree or equivalent in Psychology, and we would normally expect
applicants to have completed an appropriate Masters degree.
International students are welcome to apply, however our studentships
only cover fees at the UK/EU level. The School offers a fee bursary of
up to 4500 per annum for exceptional international students.

An application form can be downloaded from http://www.bangor.ac.uk/
