PRESS RELEASE FROM STM
25 May 2011
STM welcomes Professor Hargreaves Review on Intellectual Property: Digital Opportunity and applauds his recognition of the significant role that IP can play in economic growth. The goal of the review, to make the UK an attractive environment for the holders of IP to work and develop their businesses, is also one which STM strongly supports.
At a time when many STM members are experiencing difficulties with digital piracy, the recommendations that the UK and its trading partners put a greater emphasis on enforcement of intellectual property rights are applauded. We also support the recommendations that copyright exceptions in the UK be narrow and tailored to remain in line with international treaties and European Union legislation. STM members, many of whom are SMEs themselves, support and are deeply engaged in the "innovation agenda" by providing scores of new information tools and services, and we anticipate providing further information on how quality information supports innovation broadly.
"STM has long supported an evidence-based approach to policy formulation," said Michael Mabe commenting o n the release of the Hargreaves Report. "We look forward to working with the UK government to get better data and facts and to dispel notion that innovation is hampered by excessive copyright protection."
