I'm guessing that Michael e-mailed the list rather than just emailing
Lesley, who is presumably a colleague of his at Cranfield. Lesley has
picked up your message and mistook your reference to EDS to be short for
"EBSCO Discovery Service" which they're presumably considering or
implementing at Cranfield. They must be wanting to use Shibboleth to
authenticate their local users for EBSCO Discovery Service.
Michael explains that it's a different use of the term EDS. The EDS Rod
is talking about might be useful if they were wanting users to be able
to choose from several IdPs, but as the EBSCO Discovery Service instance
is only available to Cranfield users anyway, they're just hard-wire
their IdP into the SP to keep things simple.
(Hope I've decoded that right!)
