italian-studies: Scholarly discussions in any field of Italian studies
Armando Petrucci has a helpful introductory statement on archives in general followed by a list with brief descriptions of what specific archives hold. The focus is on medieval 'cultura scritta' but Petrucci's comments provide a good starting point for archives in general. See the chapter "Gli archivi" in Medioevo da leggere, Einaudi 1992 (pp. 67-97). Overall the book is an excellent guide.
