Call for Papers
The Department of Italian Studies at the University of Toronto
and the
Istituto Italiano di Cultura a Toronto
are pleased to announce a conference on
Italian Unification: Language, Literature, and Education
at the University of Toronto on October 14-15, 2011
The purpose of this conference is to bring together scholars interested
in revisiting the relationship between the political history and the
literary and linguistic history of Italy in the years just prior to and
just after unification. The conscience of a national language and of a
national literature as a common aspiration of the peninsula may be
simultaneously regarded as a cause or an effect of political
unification. The relationship, however, is complex and deserves
attention on many fronts, especially the educational one. The reciprocal
influence of political and literary history, the institutional
strategies for the promotion and teaching of Italian as the language of
the united country, the status of Italian in relation to the regional
dialects of Italy around the time of unification, and the impact of
unification on the dissemination of Italian in Italy and abroad are the
main themes to be explored in the conference. Proposals for papers are
invited on any aspect of these themes. Proposals may be in English or
Italian, should be about 250 words long, should include the author’s
institutional affiliation and full contact information, and should be
sent to [log in to unmask] by August 31, 2011.
