From Charlemagne to The Tudors, from Byzantium to Paris to Linlithgow, the courts of medieval Europe owed their fame to their proclaimed status as centres of cultural activity, as places for the 'beautiful people' of the age to congregate and enthral their
spectators, the charismatic magnificence of kings and queens, lords and ladies amplified by a massive display of artistic production and collective entertainment, not least tales of the deeds of Arthur and his knights, of classical heroes such as Alexander the Great
and of other great figures whether mythical or mythologised. Commemorating one of Arthur's favoured feasts, Ascension Day (June 2nd) and taking as its venue Glasgow's splendid Burrell Collection, this 'round table' brings together a group of internationally renowned scholars to explore how the medieval literary genre of romance reflects the place of aesthetics in court cultures, whether in terms of material and literary production, as well as in social performance of all kinds, from food to fashion, from combat to conversation. The programme consists of a mix of speaker presentations followed by a guided tour of the collection focusing on relevant artefacts.
