PhD Studentship
Retrofitting the City: The Role of Knowledge in Transition to Low Carbon Cities
University of Salford - School of the Built Environment (SOBE)
Centre for Sustainable Urban and Regional Futures (SURF)
(www.surf.salford.ac.uk <http://www.surf.salford.ac.uk/> )
Bursary: £13,590 p.a (plus full payment of UK/EU Tuition Fees)
Applications are invited for a 3 year PhD studentship at the University of Salford. The PhD student will be based in the Centre for Sustainable Urban and Regional Futures (SURF) and the School of the Built Environment (SOBE) and will be jointly supervised by Dr Mike Hodson and Professor Tim May.
The candidate will conduct qualitative social science research that addresses the challenges that face cities in the transition to low carbon futures; that deepens understanding of the types of strategic low carbon responses that are being developed by cities; and makes explicit the forms of knowledge that are necessary to translate these responses into action.
In particular, through using transitions analysis in urban contexts, the PhD will develop understanding of how cities (as complex entities) develop technological expectations and social visions; work through networks and intermediaries; engage with key stakeholders and the public; and develop capacity and capability to try and manage transitions in their key socio-technical infrastructures. The PhD will contribute to the possibility that systemic urban change in the social and technical organisation of infrastructure can be more effectively shaped.
The PhD will be suitable for candidates with a good first degree in the social sciences (2.1 or better). Candidates would normally be expected to have a Masters degree in a related area, with clear experience in research methods at that level.
The studentship is funded through the EPSRC Re-Engineering the City 2020-2050: Urban Foresight and Transition Management project and includes a bursary of £13,590 per year for three years. The studentship will cover the cost of UK/EU fees and so International applicants would be expected to cover the remainder of their fees. Students, for whom English is not their primary language, should have an International English Language Test System score of 6 and above or equivalent.
The project is a collaboration between SURF and the Welsh School of Architecture at Cardiff University, the Oxford Institute for Sustainable Development at Oxford Brookes University, and the University of Cambridge's Department of Engineering, Centre for Sustainable Development.
The studentship is subject to the EPSRC rules for eligibility and details can be found at the following address: www.epsrc.ac.uk/funding/students/pages/eligibility.aspx.
