Medical Research Council, Epidemiology Unit
MRC Epidemiology Unit, Cambridge
Data and Information Management Staff Required
The MRC Epidemiology Unit was set up in October 2003 to study the genetic and environmental determinants of obesity, diabetes and related metabolic disorders. For further information about the Unit please visit www.mrc-epid.cam.ac.uk.
We are looking to recruit two full-time permanent data and information management staff members who have particular strengths in Java programming, to work in an expanding data management team supporting the work of the Unit. Both post holders can expect to be involved in a wide range of computational issues. Post holders will be strong team players with excellent communication skills at all levels. They will be responsible for providing software development and wider expert advice on the management and processing of data, contributing towards the Unit's work flows and information and statistical structures.
IRC22129 Data Manager - Programmer - Permanent position - Band 4
Reporting to and managed by the Senior Data Manager (SDM), the post holder will work in conjunction and in consultation with the SDM and will be responsible for the day to day direction and program code development for software project programming work. They will support members of the Unit in software programming and with software development (both pre-existing and new). They will ensure appropriate security and access controls on all data are maintained in accordance with the Unit's requirements and current legal, security and ethical rules. Additionally, they will provide assistance and guidance to staff at all levels across the Unit (from Programme Leaders to students) in the development of programming and related databases. Along with strong Java programming, experience of software development using XML, databases and web technologies would be advantageous. Whilst the focus will be on programming the post holder will be expected to understand and contribute regularly to the general data management activities carried out by the data management team.
IRC22128 Data Manager - Programming - Permanent position - Band 5
As with the Band 4 post, this Band 5 position will involve a technical focus on Java programming and experience of software development using XML, databases and web technologies would be an advantage. Whilst the focus will be on programming the post holder will be expected to understand and contribute regularly to the general data management activities carried out by the data management team. Their work will be led by the Band 4 programmer and the SDM and will involve software development on both pre-existing and new projects. This work will involve the processing and standardisation of scientific data and its associated management through the development of appropriate software.
For both positions work will involve data from all of the Units' programmes of research, and an initial emphasis will be on providing expertise to ensure legacy software remains operational and to develop this further. Both post holders will be expected to work closely with investigating scientists and other data management staff to link scientific processes to unit data, software tools and databases.
Both posts require a BSc (or equivalent) qualification in a science, computation or mathematics based subject, ideally with some related subject experience in software development, large volume data handling and/or database development.
The starting salary for the Band 4 position will be in the range of £26,022 - £31,758 and that of the Band 5 position will be in the range £20,074 - £27,271 per annum depending on qualifications and experience. This is supported by a flexible pay and reward scheme and optional MRC final salary pension scheme. Working hours will be 36 per week.
