Health economic evaluation: beyond trials - and into the abyss?
Health economic evaluation using long-term models is now embedded into
health policy decision making. In extrapolating beyond the evidence from
randomised trials, problematic issues of model validation and structural
uncertainty are encountered which limit our ability to make reliable
inferences. I will discuss the extent to which statistical and health
economic approaches to modelling can be reconciled.
