Speakers: Matt Barnes and Vicky Brown, NatCen.
Dr Matt Barnes is a Research Director (Analyst) in the Income and Work Team at NatCen. He has over 10 years experience of analysing survey datasets, including time spent working as a researcher in the Cabinet Office.
Vicky Brown is a Senior Survey Statistician at NatCen. She has five years experience in analysing a variety of administrative and survey datasets, spending most of that time as a Statistician with the Government Statistical Service before joining NatCen.
Course description
This course will provide an overview of the process of designing and carrying out secondary analysis of large-scale survey datasets. Participants will be taught the key stages of a secondary analysis research project - from developing research questions, through planning and undertaking data analysis, to strategies for disseminating findings. The course will include taught sessions and interactive learning using real-life examples from a recent project the presenters have worked on. Note: the course will include some on-screen demonstrations using SPSS but will not include hands-on training of SPSS or any other statistical package. However, the course will direct participants to other NCRM-run analysis courses for those wishing to learn more about relevant statistical software and techniques.

The event will start at 9.30am and close at 4.45pm, registration will begin at 9.15am. Lunch and refreshments will be provided.

Who is this course for?
This course is aimed at those with little or no experience of analysing survey data who want a succinct overview of the secondary analysis research process. It is suitable for a range of participants, including those wishing to plan a dissertation or Ph.D., those in the early stages of an analytical research career, qualitative researchers who want an awareness of quantitative research and commissioners of secondary analysis research projects.
Fees
£30 for UK registered postgraduate students; £60 for staff at UK academic institutions, ESRC funded researchers and registered charity organisations; £220 for all other participants. All fees include event materials, lunch, morning and afternoon tea. They do not include travel and accommodation costs.
