Position announced on: Apr 18, 2011
Apply at latest on: May 18, 2011 at 3:45 PM
Fixed-term: Permanent

Employer:
Faculty of Social Sciences
Department of Social Studies
The University of Helsinki is among the leading multidisciplinary research universities in the world. In addition to its 11 faculties, the University includes several independent institutes, some of which are jointly operated with other universities. Some 35,000 students are currently pursuing an undergraduate or postgraduate degree at the University of Helsinki.
The Department of Social Research is a multidisciplinary unit with seven disciplines: communication, social and cultural anthropology, social policy, social psychology, social work, sociology and statistics. The Department is the largest Finnish unit in its field and is at the forefront in terms of both research and teaching. It employs more than 200 people: 30 professors, 27 university lecturers and more than 100 externally funded researchers and doctoral students. The Department has 2,300 major students, of whom 400 are pursuing a postgraduate degree, and grants approximately 200 Bachelor’s, 180 Master’s and 26 doctoral degrees each year.
The Department of Social Research at the University of Helsinki invites applications for the position of
PROFESSOR
to commence on 1 January 2012. The field of the position is Social and Cultural Anthropology.
Social and Cultural Anthropology aims to develop a theoretical understanding of the diversity of human cultures and social formations through broad comparative ethnography. The study programme in anthropology emphasises a mastery of the discipline’s traditional classics and ethnographic competence as the basis for theoretical innovation. Due to the discipline’s comparative scope, the regional specialisation and theoretical range of the applicants will be given particular attention in filling the position. The appointee is expected to complement the competencies of the teaching staff in anthropology and should ideally have a doctoral degree in social and/or cultural anthropology.
According to Section 33 of the Universities Act (No 558/2009), a professor shall carry out and supervise scientific work, provide training based on it, follow developments in research, and participate in the local community and in international cooperation in his or her field.
According to the Regulations of the University of Helsinki, an appointee to a professorship shall hold a doctoral degree and have top level scholarly qualifications, experience in the supervision of scientific research, the ability to provide top level teaching based on research and to supervise theses and dissertations as well as documentation of international cooperation in the research field that the appointee represents.
According to the Government Decree on Universities, professors are required to be competent in the language in which they provide instruction, in other words, Finnish. They must also have at least satisfactory spoken and written skills in Swedish. Foreign citizens, non-native Finnish citizens or citizens who have not been educated in Finnish or Swedish may be exempted from this requirement without a separate application. To successfully attend to the duties of the position, the appointee must also have good English skills.
When considering the applicant’s qualifications, attention will be given to scientific publications and other research results of scientific value, teaching experience, pedagogical training, the ability to produce teaching materials, other teaching merits and, if necessary, a demonstration of teaching skills as well as the applicant’s participation in doctoral education. Account will also be taken of the applicant’s activity in the scientific community, success in obtaining external research funding, scientific work outside Finland and international elected positions.
The University of Helsinki offers a salary dependent on qualifications and work experience ranging from a minimum 4,880 euro up to a maximum of 6,200 euro gross per month for a full-time position.
Applications and their enclosures should be drawn up in English. The applications must be accompanied by the following documents:
1. A brief, concise curriculum vitae
2. A numbered list of publications with which the applicant wishes to demonstrate his or her competence and merits; the list should follow the Academy of Finland instructions for classifying publications: http://www.aka.fi/en-GB/A/For-researchers/How-to-apply/Appendices/List-of-publications/
3. A report of experience and merits which may be of relevance for the evaluation of teaching skills
4. A report of the applicant’s research activities and the supervision of theses and dissertations (including activities in scientific communities and the acquisition of research funding),
or, alternatively, an academic portfolio containing the above documents and information (http://www.helsinki.fi/recruitment/academic-portfolio.html)
5. A brief presentation (max. 2 pages) of the applicant’s vision of the direction in which anthropology should be developed both as a discipline and in terms of academic research
6. At most ten (10) publications numbered as in the list of publications. These publications must be clearly marked on the enclosed list of publications by, for example, circling the number of the relevant publication. Applicants whose publications are sent to the assessors will later be requested to provide three additional copies of their publications.
Applications addressed to the Faculty of Social Sciences must be delivered, together with the required enclosures, to the following address: University of Helsinki Registry, P.O. Box 33 (Yliopistonkatu 4), 00014 University of Helsinki, Finland. The closing date for applications is 18 May 2011 at 15.45 local Helsinki time.
Further information about the position may be obtained from Professor Karen Armstrong, tel. +358 9 191 22503, [log in to unmask], and from Keijo Rahkonen, Head of the Department of Social Research, tel. +358 9 191 24572, [log in to unmask]
