Three linked PhD studentships are available from the academic year 2011/2012 under the broad theme: Social exclusion of older people with dementia: processes, approaches and methods through the ESRC White Rose Doctoral Training Centre, a collaboration between the universities of Leeds, York and Sheffield. A multidisciplinary approach will be employed to examine social inclusion/ exclusion pertinent to the well-being of people with dementia, focusing on the following topics:
• Examining changes in social relationships and networks with onset and exacerbation of impairment. Informal enquiries to Mary Godfrey, University of Leeds, Tel: +44 (0)113 3433959 Email: [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>
• Exploring uses of digital technologies to facilitate social engagement of older people with early stage dementia; investigating methods of non-verbal communication to ensure inclusion of those with moderate/severe dementia in research. Informal enquiries to: Professor Gail Mountain, University of Sheffield, Tel:+44(0) 114 2222982 Email: [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>
• Methods for accessing the ‘voices’ of people with cognitive impairment in research: Informal enquiries to Professor Gillian Parker, University of York, Tel: +44(+0)1904 321292 Email: : [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>
Each student project will be supervised by two members of academic staff, one from the University of Leeds and one from either the University of Sheffield or the University of York. The linked nature of the projects and the collaborative network approach means there will be formal and informal opportunities for cross-fertilisation between projects as well as access to the training resources of all three universities
The Leeds led studentship will be based at the Leeds Institute of Health Sciences, at the University of Leeds. The title of the project is: Social relationships, networks and people with dementia. A brief description of the project is provided in the attachment. Supervisors are: Mary Godfrey, Leeds Institute of Health Sciences, University of Leeds; and Dr Bernard van den Berg, Centre for Health Economics, University of York.
