Hello

Yet another example of dismantling infrastructure without having a
clear plan for what will replace it. But, it is an opportunity, yet
another one, to get digital services for education a little bit more
right. The one thing Teachers TV didn't really need to be was
broadcast TV. What it should be is well-tagged atoms of multimedia
content (including slideshows etc), available for plugging in to any
other channels and websites. So, we have that opportunity now.

I know that some people (from ICT education) are downloading
everything to make more widely available as and when they can, and at
the same time, DfE is likely to maintain an archive of its own (?) So
it's unlikely to get lost.

The task for our sector is to aggregate the videos in clusters with
other suitable material, in multiple and fluid ways, without
unnecessary confusion and duplication for the user. The Culture Grid
certainly has the right underlying structure to handle this, and the
ABC of Working with Schools could be a great way to serve some of the
most relevant materials from the Grid (Teachers TV and other material)
to museum & heritage educators. The Education Arts Service (LONSAS
going nationwide) could help serve it to creative practitioners in
education too.

The main end users, teachers, will surely want all the Teachers TV
material to be available in one place, clearly designated as a
resource for teachers. If they could find it alongside other resources
for professional development, such as information about teaching
awards, training offers, learning resources, organised by discipline
and theme, that would be even better. Hopefully, that will be handled
by DfE as part of an overarching 'digital content ecosystem' that was
stalled last year when BECTA was axed.

This is written in ignorance about what DfE (and DCMS) currently plan,
but hoping that by expressing the right principles, it might influence
some thinking a little bit.

best wishes
Bridget McKenzie
