Access freelancer: National Maritime Museum

Up to 2 days per week, flexible hours. 150 per day.  
May 2011 - December 2011

We are seeking a freelance educator who has experience in both developing and delivering access programmes in a cultural setting. They will be responsible for; the delivery and promotion of a programme of access events, responding to requests from individuals and groups who require additional physical and intellectual support to engage with the Museum and to pro-actively maintain key relationships with Deaf and disabled individuals and community groups.

We are looking for someone with a track record of working with Deaf and disabled audiences and with some experience of planning and delivering events. The successful candidate will be creative in their approach and able to work flexibly including some evening and weekend work.  Ideally they will be available for an immediate start.

Responsibilities:
.	To develop, deliver and promote events for Deaf visitors and blind and partially- sighted visitors
.	To respond appropriately to access requests from Deaf and disabled individuals and groups.
.	To work with the Communications team to build an effective marketing strategy and generate up-to-date databases for target audiences
.	To maintain access resources and communications such as large print guides, Braille guides, audio orientation guides and website pages
.	To work closely with the Adult Learning Manager and Archive Learning Officer to ensure access provision is embedded in the adult learning programme
.	To work with the Family Learning Officer to develop key bespoke days for families with access needs.
.	To work with others in the Informal Learning Team to develop and deliver access strands of large scale public events 
.	To provide some advisory support to the wider Museum in relation to access requirements and audience needs

Skills and experience needed

Essential:
.	Knowledge of issues relating to running events for Deaf and blind and partially-sighted people in a museum or cultural setting
.	Experience of guiding blind or partially-sighted people 
.	Up to date knowledge of key organisations providing support for Deaf and disabled people.
.	Experience of developing and managing access activities

Desirable:
.	Experience of working with Deaf people 
.	Experience of briefing BSL interpreters 
.	Basic BSL skills (Level 1)
.	Experience of marketing museum access events
