Thinkpads are certainly strongly built, and weigh correspondingly;
my wife and I have two, or three if you count the related Lenovo 850;
but they're in no way damp- or dirt-proof, and can do with one of
Gareth Talbot's cases. Don't put the thing in the case unless it
is at least suspended, or it will overheat.
I do like the thinkpad's pointing device, which is not a touchpad
but a sort of stud that you gently nudge one way or another.
My wife disagrees, and uses an external mouse.
Incidentally one of these machines has been almost continuously 'up'
for nearly seven years and is still going strong; we've just upgraded
the Linux installation.
