Hi all,
Has anyone else ever advised on this topic? I have an employee who reports a reduced sense of smell who is required to work on occasion in confined spaces with gas monitor and emergency escape kit. Individual has no other medical issues. My advice so far to the company is:-
"I can find no indication in the current legislation and guidelines to indicate that a sense of smell is a requirement when working in confined spaces and indeed the majority of the harmful gases that may be present in confined spaces has no smell and is only detectable with a gas monitor. Smell is not a reliable way to detect harmful substances.
I therefore recommend that if individual is required to work in a confined space all the necessary pre entry tests are carried out and the gas monitor is correctly worn and maintained at all times."
All advice welcome.
Many Thanks
Lesley
