Dear Mark

When Fast Forward 2010 gets published, this will include for the first time a break down of specialist expertise at museums as well as the collection size data. This survey is the biennial benchmark data gathering exercise for West Midlands museums that has been underway since about 1990.

By comparing with a trail in Wales, our team are pretty certain that the data can be extrapolated to the rest of the UK.

Dear all,

I've been putting together my paper for the next NatSCA news on an
interesting thought experiment that I spoke to some of you about. However,
what started as a simple thought experiment has escalated somewhat and I
like to ask you all for some information.

I'd be much obliged if you could let me know, for your institution how
many people are responsible for collections care and management for
natural history collections at your institution and roughly, how many
object they are responsible for.

So for example if you worked at the Wicksworth Herbarium with 4 million
objects as a full time curator with a part time assistant you'd reply
with:

Wicksworth Herbarium
Staff: 1.5
Objects: 4 million

I'd like this information to examine whether the way I see our subsector
actually reflects the reality. I won't be storing the data, I'm just going
to plug the numbers into a spreadsheet in a quick analysis and I'm only
asking for the institution name so I don't count museums/department twice.
Also, PLEASE DON'T EMAIL THE REST OF THE LIST email replies to

Unless, of course this data set or similar exists already in which case I
wouldn't mind a gentle point in the right direction.

Kind regards

Mark Carnall
