Dying, health, risk and working class culture
The Health and Social Care Institute invites high quality proposals from applicants with excellent undergraduate profiles in medical sociology/sociology of health or death studies and a track record of completing projects to tight deadlines. This is a 1 plus 3 studentship that provides a stipend at the standard Research Council rate (currently £13,590, and rising slightly each year) and tuition fees for an ESRC compatible Masters in Social Research (1 year) and a PhD (three years). Costs associated with fieldwork will also be provided. The majority of the funding is being generously provided by the Foundation for the Sociology of Health and Illness.
The successful applicant should be in a position to take up the studentship in October 2011.
The study will examine the experience of dying amongst marginalised socio-economic groups in the North East. This will involve interviewing the primary carers of people who have died from chronic illness 3 to 4 months after the death. Particular emphasis will be given to the interplay of death and dying, risk management and social class. Prospective candidates must be able to demonstrate some background knowledge and a strong interest in the sociology of the following areas: death and dying, risk and governance, working class culture, and health promotion/public health. An excellent undergraduate profile in qualitative and basic quantitative social research is essential.
