Hello everyone - I know the report attached was posted to this list previously but I send it again as it may also be of use to us in considering questions of 'impact' 'effectiveness' etc

Although of course it is true that there cannot be objective measures of 'impact' or 'effectiveness' of LD initiatives and, as Len points out, it would not be possible or ethical to run trials with control groups or other conventional experimental models ... nonetheless there is a rich tradition of qualitative research and use of mixed methods on which we can draw to gather and evaluate evidence about the effects and value of learning development work.
This community of practice - the LDHEN - is now almost ten years old. In that time we have accumulated much experience and data of many kinds about the impact of our work, and we have built our bodies of knowledge. We have tried various approaches to improving the learning experience of students in HE and have many rich stories to tell. These reside in the archives of this list, in the presentations and discussions at our seven previous conferences, in the book chapters, papers and articles written for our journal and other publications, as well as in ourselves as professionals.
I think it would be timely and very worthwhile for us to commission some systematic research to sift through, evaluate and re-present some of this work for the purposes of reporting to our HEIs and making the case for building on and strengthening learning development work, staffing and resources.

Also Paula Moran at QUB worked on a LearnHigher development project which aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of different learning support interventions. I think this is on the LEarnHigher website but if not, Paula or Chris Keenan should be should be able to let you have a copy.

Well ... as a starter ... back in November, Paul Probyn at the The Royal Veterinary College asked a similar question and Linda Barkas replied that she had been involved in some research into 'effectiveness of learning support' - I wonder Linda, would you mind letting us know if your research is published yet and if it is publicly available?

I would be grateful if anyone could point me to available literature on these issues ('reliable qualitative and quantitative evidence for the effectiveness and value of learning development work in HEIs') or any other published material, for something I'm engaged with at the moment.
