Very timely, having just come out of a SW HER group meeting which discussed that very point. The new number is necessary to link to the new website (as in the url given by Crispin). I had a look at the downloadable data sets, and although they are dated a few days ago, they do not record the new numbers. There is a possible other issue in that County SM numbers were going to be replaced as well but I've not checked what the new list says about them.
I'd fully endorse the need for a concordance file to be made available as soon as possible.

Subject: New Heritage List queries
Hi All
HBSMR users are starting to ask us...
a) whether the new Heritage List has any implications for the way they record Designations in HBSMR, and also
b) since the new list adds a new reference number for each record, what to do about this. For example LBS 192715 has now become "List entry Number: 1061769", with the legacy number displayed further down the page
http://list.english-heritage.org.uk/resultsingle.aspx?uid=1061769
This is probably worth discussion and clarification with EH involvement, but our initial impression is:
a) no fundamental change needed, because these are still Scheduled Monuments, Listed Buildings etc. The new list is simply a unified means of access.
b) Yes, we need this new reference number in HER records (in order to be able to automatically hyperlink to the details on the new web site, etc). What would be very useful here would be if EH could distribute a simple dataset (e.g. CSV) giving concordance between the new ID and all old IDs (LBSUID, SAM, etc). This would allow all HERs to brings things up to date, either themselves or with a little help from us.
Are we on the right lines, and can this dataset be distributed asap?
c) question from us... does the new system have any web services etc that can be interrogated to pick up new or amended designations, or are these still only being distributed as email/pdf?
All the best
Crispin
