Hi Kate,
Interesting post...
I am in exactly the same situation as you- graduated over 10 years ago from History but also Archival Sciences, but since coming to the UK (I'm from the non-English speaking country) I have not been given a chance to work in the archival/ records management environment, so for me it is also a matter of a career change. I have been to several interviews but with no success so far. To increase my chances I was also considering giving up my paid job and start volunteering in the archives, but out of what you are saying- this is not a solution...
Out of my experience with interviews in London, although I am confident I could do the job and know that in a very short space of time would become one of the best workers, there is not many employers out there who are prepared to spend some time on training new people. They want things moving right from the beginning- at least when it comes to the paid workers.
I am considering moving out of London where is a very big competition and moving up North.
Well, I was not going to give up just yet, but what you are saying does not sound encouraging...
I can only say "Good Luck!" with your search and let's hope that things will be brighter soon for both of us!
