We are pleased to announce the 2011 Summer School in Archeological Palynology at the University Peruana Cayetano Heredia (UPCH):

This Summer School will be led by Dr. Dawn M. Marshall PhD (Co-Director of Palynology Lab, Texas A&M University) and Prof. Luis Huaman (Director of Palynology and Paleobotany Lab, UPCH).
This summer’s instructional program will involve UPCH’s Archaeobiology Program and focus on enabling participants to gain the knowledge in essential skills and techniques in Palynology, including:
* Integration and Development of Field Research Goals and Sampling from a P.I. and Specialist’s Point of View
* Processing of Distinct Samples with an Emphasis on the Recovery of Specific Types of Palynomorphs Common to the Neotropics
* Interpretation of Results Mindful of Archaeological Contexts and Considerations as well as their Integration with other Archaeobotanical Datasets (macrophytes, phytoliths and starch grains)
We will pursue active field work at the Preceramic archaeological site of Las Shicras, Huaral Province, Department of Lima. We will take samples in conjunction with the ongoing excavation in the early days of the course and then process and analyze the samples for palynomorphs during the remainder fo the course in the Palynology and Paleobotany Lab at UPCH. During the fieldwork portion students will live and work in the rural village near to the site of Huaral, and travel to other similar sites in the region, including Caral. For the remainder of the course students will be housed in hotel accommodation in Lima.
The course is aimed at undergraduate and postgraduate students of archaeology, biology (botany, ethnobotany, etc.), anthropology, and related sciences.
Course fees will cover:
* All travel within Peru associated in the course
* All lab and field fees associated with the course
* All housing costs associated with the course
* Certain meals
