Please see below for information regarding the next British Mass Spectrometry Society (BMSS) 3-day meeting in Cardiff along with a message from Don Jones regarding changes to poster submissions this year. The Clinical and Forensic Group will have a full day with 2 sessions of speakers on the Wednesday of this years meeting. The second of the sessions will be run jointly with the British Endocrine Society and will feature invited speakers from that field. If you have a poster to present but would also like to speak at the meeting then please select oral presentation when submitting your abstract.
In addition, there will be two 1-day Mass Spectrometry training courses on the Sunday and Tuesday during the meeting. The Tuesday course has been specifically catered with clinical and biomedical scientists in mind. The course will cover the different types of mass spectrometers, ionisation sources, quantitative and qualitative work, interpreting mass spectra, accurate mass/high resolution, and the challenges of coupling HPLC to MS. The course is run by highly experienced members of the BMSS from academia, pharmaceutical and manufacturer backgrounds. There are no requirements for extensive chemistry or mass spectrometry knowledge to attend this course. Details of these courses will follow soon.
Lastly, we are in the process of arranging a workshop specialising in the challenges of getting LC, GC and MS systems linked up to various LIMS and the questions you should be asking when going to tender for a new IT system. This workshop will be broadly applicable but will focus on the various NHS-based Path IT systems. The workshop will take place during the lunch break on the Wednesday of the 3-day meeting in Cardiff. Please email me at [log in to unmask] to let me know if this workshop would be of interest to you.

Dear BMSS Members,
I am glad to announce that the abstract submission for BMSS Cardiff 2011 is now open.
Abstracts should be submitted on the online abstract submission system found at Meeting information page at http://www.bmss.org.uk/
PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING POSTER CHANGES:
In recent years submission of multiple posters by single authors has meant that posters are left unattended during poster sessions which reduces the opportunities for technical discussion for delegates. Thus, this year, submission of multiple posters will be scrutinised carefully and we will ask that the author must be present at the poster in order to make the most of the poster sessions.
In addition, we are trialling a commercial poster room (for details contact [log in to unmask]) which will be more suitable for sales & marketing focussed posters from exhibitors / suppliers. The final decision of suitability will ultimately be taken by the BMSS Papers Secretary.
The closing date is Friday 3rd June 2011 17:00.
Don Jones,
