Subject: snap: Pauline in the Park
Pauline in the Park
regularly feeds my dog a snack.
Her own dogs permit this -
the old golden retriever,
the new tiny mincing black
poodle from the refuge
replacing her silly lapdog
that was stolen from the pavement
in front of their house
by a man in a sus-looking car
which the neighbours witnessed
without noting his number plate.
Pauline went on tv pleading -
to no avail but she is still
being asked about it at the shops
by strangers. The local paper
ran the story with a snap
of her husband who's too frail
any more to visit the park
but is pining for the stolen pooch.
Today we admire the autumn weather.
I'm a climate change sceptic,
I say, but she thinks everything
wrong is caused by us humans.
Earthquakes and tsunamis? I ask.
Well, she said my theory is they happen
because of all the depth charges
in world war two. That, I say,
should give the scientists some work.
Have a nice day. Have a nice day.
