italian-studies: Scholarly discussions in any field of Italian studies
Colleagues:
Reading some of the recent posts, I have been asking myself, "Whither
queer Italian Studies?" I particularly do not mean in any way to take
away from the important efforts of my colleagues at John Cabot (where
I have been teaching the past few summers as an adjunct), but I am
hoping that, during the recent discussion of Joseph Brodsky and in the
upcoming discussion of Alberto Moravia, some space is given over to
issues of gender and sexual politics. I will confess that I am still
a bit miffed that an Italian Studies journal in the US refused even to
send out for review my essay on Brodsky's homophobia in his book on
Venice, the editor saying that its subject matter was not appropriate
for a journal in Italian Literary Studies (!) In any case, I am
wondering if anyone knows of a bilingual, transcontinental queer
Italian Studies organization, or if anyone is interested in trying to
start up such an endeavor. For those interested, I would highly
recommend Gary Cestaro's excellent Queer Italia, to which some of our
subscribers have made excellent contributions.
John
