Postgraduate Latin Summer School 18 July-19 August 2011
Thanks to the generosity of the Society for the Promotion of Roman
Studies, the University of Reading is offering one bursary of £700 to
attend this five-week Summer School. This covers the fee for the entire
Summer School but does not cover accommodation or subsistence.
The Summer School is designed specifically for graduates and final year
students who are planning to take a higher degree or to pursue a career in
Classics teaching, but feel they need to gain a higher level of competence
in Latin. Students will be expected to have read to the end of section 3
of Reading Latin (or equivalent) before the Summer School begins. They
will complete a course of study designed to enable them to engage with
unmodified Latin texts.
We also have one half-bursary of £350, funded by Friends of Classics. This
half-bursary is specifically for students who are committed to a career as
a Classics teacher in secondary schools. You can apply for both bursaries
at the same time (although of course only one bursary can be awarded to
any one person).
To apply for either of these bursaries, please send your CV together with
a letter, no more than one page long, in the post or by email attachment
to David Carter ([log in to unmask]), stating:
. your current or most recent place of study, and qualifications
awarded or pending
. your plans for postgraduate study or teacher training
. how much Latin you have studied to date
. any further reasons for applying to this Summer School
. the name and address (including email address) of one academic
referee, who has agreed to support your application
Bursary applications should be received by Tuesday 3rd May 2011.
In awarding bursaries preference will be given to students who either have
a firm commitment to pursue postgraduate degrees by research in Latin
literature, Roman History or related fields, or are firmly committed to a
career as a Classics teacher in secondary schools. References will be
taken up if we are unable to decide between candidates on the basis of
their CVs and letters alone.
Reading is in the South of England, close to Heathrow Airport and half an
hour by train from London and Oxford. The University is situated in a 130
hectare country estate, well known for its conservation meadows, rare tree
collection and large lake. Student halls have recently been substantially
rebuilt or refurbished. The Department of Classics at Reading is a
destination for taught postgraduates and research students from around the
world.
