Video transfer companies:
• The National Motor Museum in Beaulieu, Hampshire - their services and quality as well as competitive pricing (approx. £100 per tape) were recommended twice
• A company in Isleworth http://www.videondvd.co.uk/ for transferring 1980s video to DVD and they were very good and reasonable.
• David Dein at Westpoint TV in London

Est. 1990. Specialist video transfer service capable of handling most formats from VHS to High Def in PAL and NTSC, including standards conversion. Also DVD mastering and duplication.
Depositing the original tapes with MACE (Media Archive for Central England) - http://www.macearchive.org/ (or an equivalent in your area) - They convert the tapes and supply your archive with digital surrogates in return. The advantage is that you are not paying for an expensive conversion process, have useable material, and the A/V original material is being stored in ideal conditions at MACE.
I was given the advice to ask for samples and/or send one tape of each format and see if you are happy with the result if I know nothing about a company.
To choose uncompressed files as master copies (best offline as these are huge files) + a usable viewing copy.
Further I have received information on migration compression formats.
Best wishes
Kornelia
