Dear Karen,
Here in the Archive and Library at the National Maritime Museum we use Mimsy XG for our archive cataloguing. It is a museum collections database, so SPECTRUM compliant, and has lots of modules including acquisitions, locations, loans, conservation, images. We have a specially adapted archive view in the catalogue module to which ISAD(G) elements have been added and it can cope with hierarchical cataloguing. I think we were the first museum in the UK to use Mimsy for archives but some others have followed and further developments have been implemented to make it even more 'archive friendly'.
Records can be exported in xml and there is a reports add-on (useful if you need paper catalogues or print outs). Our online catalogue though is custom built and not part of Mimsy. Do get in touch if you would like any further info.
Hannah

Subject: Archive Management Systems
Dear All,
My organisation is currently considering how to manage its archives for the future. DS CALM is the front runner of the proprietary archive management systems. The other possibility is using EAD software and tools for collection management.
Does anyone have suggestions of why they use particular systems, or the advantages and disadvantages of using CALM or EAD? Ideally the system should also be able to handle museum object cataloguing.
Comments and suggestions welcome!
Thank you
Karen
