There's an interesting study of international comparisons of public engagement cultures and practices on the Sciencewise website:

Those who know me personally would take issue with your description of my Weltanschauung as "British". It is in reality more a degenerate mixture of Kiwi, Welsh and Danish, with an occasional foot in the German door by virtue of former domicile, maternal family and current affairs interest.
Going by my reading and experience of German politics and culture, the Germans and the English are not so different, and not just because Germany donated to Britain its royal castoffs. As for the status of science in society, it may be more respected in Germany, but this affair is supposedly one of intellectual integrity in broad aspect. That may be so, but human motives to action are often complex and messy, and in this case you can be sure that many in Germany are using it as an excuse to put the political and cultural boot in, as well as take a principled stand.
