I would strongly advise reading
Oreskes, N. and E. M. Conway (2010). Merchants of Doubt. New York,
Bloomsbury Press.
When thinking about how to deal with this issue. The whole strategy of
people like this is based on sowing doubt and, as they show in this book,
it is very successful. It succeeds because those who believe in the case
too often simply repeat the case for climate change/effects of passive
smoking/acid rain. For instance, have you ever seen any exhibit on
climate change discussing the counter-arguments? The more effective
strategy is to show what limited evidence the nay sayers are using and how
flawed it is. That is help the public to understand why they are wrong not
why the climate change science is right.

Jonathan Osborne
