**AQMeN Event - All in the question? Researching attitudes to
constitutional change, Monday 21st March 2011, 4-5.30pm, University of
Edinburgh, 7 George Square, Edinburgh**
Professor John Curtice, University of Strathclyde and Rachel Ormiston,
Scottish Centre for Social Research.
As we stand at the cusp of another Scottish election, John and Rachel
will discuss findings from the Scottish Social Attitudes survey on
constitutional change, drawing particularly on data from 2010 funded by
the Nuffield Foundation. The seminar will combine substantive findings
with methodological discussion, and include four main areas of reflection:
- What are the challenges in designing questions to tap views on
slippery issues such as 'independence' or options for funding a devolved
Scottish parliament?
- What is the value of using multivariate analysis to explore what
matters most in explaining why people support or oppose independence for
Scotland?
- How do we interpret apparently contradictory results?
- And does people's support for independence depend on how much tax we
would have to pay?
