medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

the curious *form* of this thing, with its arch enclosing the large crucifix,
has been of interest to me for quite some time.
i *believe* that i once saw a similar arrangement in a parish church somewhere
in the Beauce (Chartrain region) --probably late medieval or even early
modern(?)-- and i wondered if it might not have been a form which was once
much more common (appearing in major churches, replicated in priory or village
churches).
i believe that i found the Lisbjerg example illustrated in
Joseph Braun, Der christliche Altar in seiner geschichtlichen Entwicklung.
München: Alte Meister Guenther Koch, 1924.
but without much discussion of it (though it has been some decades since i
looked at this, and i could well be wrong).
does anyone have any thoughts about how common a form this might have been?
could there possibly have been some sort of conflation of the ideas of "ara
coeli" (altar of heaven) and "arca coeli" (arch of heaven), or am i just
isidorofsevilleing that Mare's Nest unmercifully?
anyway, thanks, Marjorie (B.) for finding the nice, hi-rez shot of the
Lisbjerg artifact.
