Another follow-up from abroad on Scott Denham's message:
He is absolutely right to point out that similar developments are taking
place on this side of the Atlantic. Although the funding structure of
higher education in the U.S. is very different, the humanities at large
are also under a fair amount of pressure at most American
universities--even at institutions with very large financial endowments
that, thus far, have protected their humanities departments, modern
languages in particular, from the funding cuts experienced in the UK.
This is the right list to discuss this sort of thing, and the discussion
is very instructive for us working on the other side of the Atlantic.
