The Perceptual, Cognitive And Neural Correlates Of Acute Hydration In
Young And Older Adults
University of Reading - School of Psychology and Clinical Language Sciences
Project overview: Adequate fluid intake is critical for survival.
Recent research has shown that a single 300ml hydrating drink of water
can improve cognitive function in children (Benton & Burgess, 2009).
However, very little is known about the benefits of equivalent
interventions on cognitive performance in older adults, despite being
at most risk of dehydration. Additionally, the neural level changes
that accompany such cognitive effects are poorly understood.
The successful candidate will benefit from state-of-the-art facilities
and associated expertise housed within the Centre for Neurosciences
and Neurodynamics (CINN; www.reading.ac.uk/cinn). The CINN houses
among other a research-dedicated 3T Siemens Trio MRI scanner with
fully integrated audiovisual display and eye tracking devices for
functional MRI studies. At the Department of Psychology, we have a
thriving and interdisciplinary research community (see
http://www.reading.ac.uk/pcls). Training in experimental design and
testing, statistical methods and acquiring/analysing behavioural, and
neuroimaging (MRI) data will be provided.
Given the breath of psychology and medical imaging training covered by
the research, the PhD will provide an ideal platform to progress onto
a career path within neuroscience, psychology or industrial sector.
Applicants will hold (or expect to obtain) a very high upper-second
honours degree (or equivalent) in psychology, neuroscience, biomedical
science, physics, or a related discipline. A Masters qualification in
a similar area as well as previous experience of neuroimaging methods,
behavioural/clinical testing and programming would be an advantage.
