2011 Rift Valley Institute Field Course - Great Lakes

The Great Lakes Course - Saturday 9 July to Friday 15 July in Bujumbura, 
Burundi

The Great Lakes Course covers Rwanda, Burundi and the eastern part of 
the Democratic Republic of Congo. This year's course will focus 
particularly on the historical and political background to recent 
conflict in the region, with an emphasis on elections in DRC and the 
fallout from last year's polls in Rwanda and Burundi.

Ben Shepherd, formerly research fellow at London School of Economics and 
Great Lakes specialist at the UK Foreign Office, is Course Director. The 
Deputy Director is Emily Paddon, Lecturer in International Relations at 
Oxford University. Jason Stearns, currently at Yale University, is 
Director of Studies (His book, Dancing in the Glory of Monsters: The 
Collapse of the Congo and the Great War of Africa will be out this year; 
his blog, Congosiasa, can be found at http://congosiasa.blogspot.com

Teaching staff on the Great Lakes Course this year includes a number of 
distinguished scholars and activists from Rwanda, Burundi and DRC 
including: Isidore Ndaywel e Nziem, Professor of History at the 
University of Kinshasa and author of Histoire générale du Congo; and 
Pascal Kambale, Deputy Director of the Africa Governance, Monitoring and 
Advocacy Project for the Open Society Institute.

International teaching staff will include: Catharine Newbury, Professor 
of Government at Smith College, author of The Cohesion of Oppression, 
David Newbury, Professor of African Studies at Smith College, author of 
The Land Beyond the Mists; Filip Reyntjens Professor of African Law and 
Politics, University of Antwerp, author of The Great African War; and 
Koen Vlassenroot, Conflict Research Group, Ghent University; author of 
Conflict and Social Transformation in Eastern DR Congo and co-editor or 
The Lord’s Resistance Army. More teaching staff to be confirmed.

The Great Lakes course is bilingual, with teaching and discussion in 
both French and English. Interpretation services are provided.

Successful applicants will be informed by mid April. On acceptance, full 
payment of $4,000 (US dollars), plus payment of all bank charges, will

FURTHER INFORMATION

In addition to the Great Lakes course the RVI holds two other courses, 
the Horn of Africa course (Saturday 4 to Friday 10 June in Lamu, Kenya) 
and the Sudan course (Wednesday 25 May to Tuesday 31 May in Rumbek, 
South Sudan). All three courses offer a full daily programme of talks, 
seminars and visits to sites of local interest. The courses are designed 
to challenge common assumptions and offer new perspectives on politics 
and development. All courses are residential, and there are many 
opportunities for informal discussion with the teaching staff and other 
participants.

STAGE D’ÉTUDES SUR LA RÉGION DES GRANDS LACS

Le stage dédié à la région des Grands Lacs recouvre le Rwanda, le 
Burundi et l’est de la République démocratique du Congo. Cette année, le 
stage s’intéressera particulièrement au contexte historique et politique 
des récents conflits qui sévissent dans la région, notamment aux 
élections en RDC et aux retombées des scrutins de l’année dernière au 
Rwanda et au Burundi.

Ce stage sera dirigé par Ben Shepherd, ancien chargé de recherche à la 
London School of Economics et spécialiste de la région des Grands Lacs 
au ministère britannique des Affaires étrangères. Il sera assisté par 
Emily Paddon, maître de conférences à l’Université d’ Oxford. Jason 
Stearns, de l’université de Yale, sera le directeur d’études. (Son

L’équipe enseignante du stage consacré à la région des Grands Lacs 
réunira de nombreux grands chercheurs et acteurs rwandais, burundais et 
congolais tels que: Isidore Ndaywel e Nziem, professeur d’histoire à 
l’université de Kinshasa et auteur de l’Histoire générale du Congo – De 
l’héritage ancien à la République Démocratique et Pascal Kambale, 
directeur adjoint du Projet pour l'observation et le plaidoyer sur la 
gouvernance en Afrique pour l’OSI.

Des enseignants internationaux y participeront également: Catharine

stages proposent un programme complet de conférences, séminaires et 
visites de sites dignes d’intérêt. La formule résidentielle du stage 
favorisera les échanges informels avec les enseignants et entre 
participants.
