DV8ing from tradition: A fru(straight)ed physical educator's tale

'Some men are surely, albeit with great difficulty and in slow motion
responding to recent debates about the nature of gendered identity and
dancing towards more acceptable ways of being' (Burt 1995: 198-9).
Responding to the recent call for physical educators to engage in critical
autobiographical work (e.g., Garrett 2006) this paper seeks to chart my
fru(straight)ed 'altern(arr)ative' (Grace and Benson 2001) of trying to be,
become and belong as a dance educator/researcher within a physical education
profession, that despite thirty plus years of feminist research, is still
dominated by a limited and limiting heteronormative 'jock' culture (e.g.,
Clarke 2002, 2004; McCaughtry et al 2005; Sparkes et al 2007). Drawing upon
(pro)feminist, poststructural and queer theory (e.g., Butler 1990, 1993) as
well as the developing literature on queering straight masculinities (Clyde
200; Heasley 2005; Hill 2006; Rodriguez & Pinar 2007; Thomas 2000) I will
demonstrate how positive changes with regard to gender (and sexual) justice
(Mills & Keddie 2007; Keddie 2005; Keddie 2006a/b) have been made to my dance
teaching. In order to illuminate this I will draw upon the work of Lloyd
Newson's DV8 Physical Theatre and in particular their 1995 production 'Enter
Achilles' which sought to challenge heteronormative male bonding and
homophobic policing. I will argue this dance has many parallels to PETE's
dominant jock culture and through a deconstructive reading will outline its
educative potential in broadening PE teacher's (and subsequently their
students) understanding of what it means to be gendered.
Biographical note: For the past ten years I have worked at the University of
Bedfordshire as a senior lecturer in the Department of Physical Education and
Sports Sciences. My main teaching responsibilities are delivering dance
education and sociology modules to both undergraduate and postgraduate
physical education/sports studies students. I am currently writing my PhD,
'Restoring to restor(y)ing heteronormativity in physical education: a
fru(straight)ed dance educator's tale' which is to be submitted September
2011.
