International Conference
"Between East and West: Cultural and Religious Dialogue before, during and after the Totalitarian Rule"
Riga, Latvia, 6-7 October 2011
The Latvian Society for the Study of Religions in cooperation with the University of
Latvia and Daugavpils University announces the international scientific conference on
religious studies. We welcome scholars from a wide range of academic disciplines
and fields that relates to this area of study. Consistent with the regional focus of the
conference, proposals addressing Central and East European issues and approaches
are especially welcome. The subject of a paper of any category may reflect general
concerns in the academic study of religion, or it may reflect meaningful problems in a
specific area of history of religion or religious and cultural studies. Suggested topics
may include but are not limited to:
? Cultural and religious dialogue in totalitarian and post-totalitarian space
? Religious persecutions in the collective memory
? Contacts between religions and cultures: from conflicts to dialogue
? Religious studies: theoretical premises and historical foundations, current trends
? Religion in the public sphere: Eastern and Western models
? Searching for new models of religion: new religious movements
? Individualization of religion in the context of globalization
? Social and gender aspects in religion
? Contemporary religious situation
